Nashboro Records Panel Discussion Audio [For Paid Subscribers Only]
In September, Regina McCrary, Everett Drake and I had a discussion about Nashville's most prolific gospel label at the National Museum of African-American Music. Here it is!
Since God’s Music My Life began in 2021, one of my focuses has been on artists who recorded for Nashville’s most prolific gospel label, Nashboro Records.
I wrote a feature about the label’s history for UDiscoverMusic which gives a brief synopsis of the label’s inception with five highlights from their catalog, but I’ve also written about Nashboro artists/musicians like the New York Community Choir, the Twenty-First Century Singers, Dewitt Johnson, Dr. Bobby Jones and New Life, Derrick Lee in addition to an extended piece with highlights from the label’s discography.
In September, Byron Harvey (from the National Museum of African-American Music) moderated a discussion with myself, Regina McCrary of the McCrary Sisters (who began recording as a child in the BC&M Choir on Nashboro Records) and Everett Drake (who sang with the Johnson Ensemble & The Twenty-First Century Singers on the label). We had an extensive conversation about the label’s history, their memories of those incredibly productive days and how the label positioned them to have careers with longevity (over 50 years for both artists).
